It may seem like an easy thing to answer, but the truth is that most people won’t be able to answer it truthfully or completely the first time around. Many things you think are important turn out not to be once scrutinized under the lens of the 80/20 principle.

If you have have not heard about this principle, the simple version is this: everything in your life, including your time, your experiences, your accomplishments and even the people in your life are divided into a small set of truly important ones (the 20%) and a vast majority of unimportant ones (the 80%).

People who do not know which is which live their life aimlessly, without focus, spending energy and attention on everything and everyone, not realizing that it is impossible because when everything is important, nothing is. So jump off the treadmill and start cutting back on everything you spend your time on that is not central to your mission in life, whether it is people, things or activities.

You’ll need some time to figure out what it’s in your 20%, but once you do, you’ll start living life with a laser-sharp focus that will guide you to the success you are looking for.
